Okay, so, there are many reasons why I love Warehouse 13. The show is fun; the cast is hilarious; the actresses are just as dedicated to making the big femslash ship maintext as the fans are. But the fact that one acafan did a statistical analysis and graphs of how the data spread after Jaime Murray discussed spoilers about Bering and Wells at MCM Expo this weekend? That may be one of my favourite things of ALL.

(Also, the graphs are really pretty, and I want to know which node I am!)

The con, speaking of, was absolutely awesome (if remarkably full of smelly people). Relevant posts and brief commentary from me at the mcmexpo tag on my tumblr, but the basic info is that Jaime Murray is REALLY PRETTY IN PERSON OH MY GOD (even if she's thin enough I kind of want to wrap her in bubblewrap), and also a total tease to her fangirls about spoilers and loves trolling us. :P

It's interesting, given the fact that the Genies and the Geminis have just merged into one giant awards show, that all of a sudden there seems to be so much Canadian tv actually a) getting notice outside of Canada and b) being allowed to be - well, not always open, but a little less apologetic, about being Canadian. And I am watching, and loving, a lot of it!

Currently on my to-watch list: Continuum and Primeval: New World, both of which are sci-fi shows set unabashedly in Vancouver (P:NW is on the verge of cancellation after its first series).

On the other side of the country (because even if things are improving, we've still got the Vancouver-Toronto hubs), I've been watching a couple of shows that pass the Bechdel test every.single.episode - and should, given their titles: Bomb Girls and Lost Girl.

A few people have been bugging me to watch Lost Girl for months: it came up in class during our week on vampires and sexuality, which I took as a sign, and then when news of the season four renewal came out the other day I put it up the list. I'm a few episodes in now and highly entertained.

It's a sci-fi/crime/dramedy (...yeah, we need to have discussions about genre) set in nominally-Toronto (I understand it gets Toronto-y-er later on) about a succubus named Bo who solves supernatural crimes, and also sleeps with a lot of people (isn't Dyson the name of a vacuum cleaner?). [personal profile] sophia_gratia and I may be watching it wrong, as our primary takeaway thus far is that Kenzi (the Robin to Bo's Batman) needs to team up with Claudia (from Warehouse 13) and Kate (from Sanctuary) and Take Over The World. I would so far recommend it as light and fluffy and the kind of urban fantasy that I really enjoy: not afraid to fuck around with mythology, with a relatively well-developed narrative structure and some interesting world-building.

It also, as I said, regularly passes the Bechdel test, featuring two kickass women who team up to fight crime. Plus it has some interesting queer cred: not only is Bo bisexual, the fae world seems to be remarkably sexually nonjudgemental, save for when it comes to sleeping with humans. The show regularly makes me laugh out loud, and I adore the super-cute friendhsip between Bo and Kenzi. It's a pretty standard supernatural twist on a reluctant-brooding-hero narrative, but it's nice to see that play out with a reluctant heroine for a change.

Waaaay on the other end of the spectrum is Bomb Girls which is a historical drama about the women who worked in a munitions factory in Toronto during World War II. This is also one that had vaguely been on my radar, but then... well, a couple of weeks ago I was told that [livejournal.com profile] killer_quean was working on a Bomb Girls/Warehouse 13 crossover that would "make Karen's head explode with Canadian gay." I quote. So I watched the show. What, I'm weak.

Bomb Girls is incredible. It's the kind of historical fiction that we rarely seem to get outside of serious CBC biopics or near-NFB docudramas; it takes a period of Canadian history and does something with it rather than trying to faithfully represent it. It is brilliantly written, beautifully cast, incredibly well acted, and completely all about the ladies. It also doesn't shy away from representing a fairly full picture of Canada at the time: the same episode that gives us the Leafs' 1942 Stanley Cup run similarly gives us the harsh realities of the Italian (and Ukrainian, and Japanese...) wartime internment camps.

Aside from being deliciously Canadian, it is a wonderful look at representations of female strength and community. It deals with queerness, racism, religion, cheating, abortion, PTSD, sexual mores in general, and does so in a relatively nuanced way. The characters keep unfolding new comlpexities and new relationships. All the leads are amazing and I am a little bit in love with Meg Tilly, who is just ridiculous (I mean, ridiculously good, but also just ridiculous as a person). Oh and also it has Peter Outerbridge, who is AMAZING in everything he does. Highly recommended: if you're in Canada, it streams on Global, I think. The second half of the second season comes back on the 25th, I think: there are only 12 episodes so far, so plenty of time to catch up! :P

ALSO, promo photos for Warehouse 13's return next month. Myka I have missed your face and your hair and your everything, mostly your face. Plus, Myka punching people, in the trailer, makes my heart swell. Come back show come back and be awesome. (Please be awesome.)

Note for anyone not assigned to me: I am on AO3 as kathryne. :)

My very dear Yuletide writer! Thank you so much for writing for me, first off. I'm extremely excited and I know that as long as you enjoy what you're writing, I will too! I am going to ramble a bit about my general likes and then my fandom-specific likes, but I hope that if you have an idea that doesn't quite fit with the fandom-specific thoughts that you'll run with it and write something fun for you.

In general, I like stories about awesome women. :D This doesn't mean that I just like strong women - there is a lot to be said for vulnerabilities - but complexities of character are key. Of course, if you've offered to write one of my requests, you probably understand that perfectly. I like relationshippy stories, but I would also enjoy gen or friendship fic about any of the ladies I've requested. I do like a little plot with my porn, if that's the direction you're going, but the porn part is certainly not mandatory.

I like off-panel moments, backstory that we know must have happened but never saw, angst, sex, no sex. I like both happy endings and sad endings! I love character interaction and banter and humour and snark. I like linear narrative and non-linear, experimental narrative.

I dislike embarrassment/humiliation, non-con (though I love power dynamics), stories about Epic Man Pain, poor grammar, and illlogical characterization.

Casino Royale Bond-verse )

I am really looking forward to Yuletide-y goodness, and I hope that even after reading this, you are too. :D Please remember that optional details are optional and have FUN, and thank you for writing me a fic!

I love you already. :D I am going to babble a little bit about what I like in fic in general before moving on to what I like about the specific fandoms and pairings I listed; if you already have some ideas, please feel free to ignore the second part of this altogether and write whatever floats your boat.

Huh! Warehouse 13 has been accepted as a Yuletide fandom! I honestly did not think it would qualify this year, but I am pleased that it did.

Speaking of Warehouse, spoilers for 4x09 )

Next week's gonna be the cliffhanger. omg. I'm not ready.

And now I have one more frigging 9am class to teach tomorrow and I am going to go fall over. So much teaching. And next week I add another five hours! *cries*

DISCUSS.

Also, how are there only two more episodes before the mid-season break? That is not okay. And then they won't be back until April and I will be sad.

It was actually seeing a gifset of this Helena and Myka deleted scene from Warehouse 13 2x07 that made me decide to watch the show. It's completely out of context, so there are no spoilers for those of you just starting to watch. ;) I don't know, I just love it for Helena being all adorable and easily impressed and Myka being charmed despite herself and the flirtiness and, yeah. And now somebody has posted it so I can share!

Me: *sigh*

other than that... )

I've figured it out! The secret to Warehouse 13 fic is that no matter where your actual plot is going to go, starting with "Pete does something stupid with an artifact" is always the answer!

...if you really need to change it up, it can be "an artifact does something stupid to Pete," too.

Thirteen Things I Love About Warehouse 13
an incomplete list in no particular order that may or may not contain thirteen items

These are not particularly spoilery, for the most part, save the last one, which is, shall we say, spoilery in a casting-related way for 4.01 and 4.02. Unless you consider it spoilery to say that Myka and H.G are totally gay for each other, in which case, sorry, I've just spoiled you. Oops.

warning for capslock abuse )

Two things I don't love about W13, just to round out the list:

1. If you're going to have a character compare their father to a Pat Conroy novel (complete with having the pertinent ep feature a high school football player whose team is the Tigers, which made me do things with my face), then there really needs to be more follow-through. I'm just saying.

2. Okay, this is more about the fandom, but if I read another fic where someone is trying to talk about the poor sexually repressed Victorians, I am going to beat them about the head with Foucault's History of Sexuality. I'M JUST SAYING, OKAY, you don't need to be able to cite the book but come on.

Ahem.

Anyways so I kind of like this show, eh? I feel bad not having an icon for it on DW, but you can always click through to LJ until I have a chance to re-up my account here (which is unlikely to happen given the amazing shoes I just bought...)

Exhibit A, Sanctuary's season three Helen Magnus AU-self: crazy cat lady.

Exhibit B, Warehouse 13's season three Helena Wells AU self: crazy cat lady.

(see also: Myka's face)

I rest my case: totally the same universe.

(Or: all queer Victorian time-travelling scientist ladies react the same to having their memories messed with? Hmm, needs a larger sample size...)
tellitslant: agatha making a shushing gesture (sanctuary - helen - carry a big gun)
Soooo in my copious spare time (I refuse to work on my thesis before 10am or after 10pm, shush) I appear to have started watching Warehouse 13, spurred on by spoilers about the season premiere and also [personal profile] sophia_gratia's insistent poking. It's kind of an adorable little show, isn't it? It reminds me a lot of Sanctuary in its genre playfulness. I mean, both series had episodes about having to deal with the sudden appearance of a real-life comic book superhero! Seriously, kind of awesome.

I refuse to believe that it and Sanctuary do not in fact exist in the same universe, because come on: two sci-fi shows about the hidden truths behind things we believe to be mythological, with varying degrees of connection to the US government, and involving real historical figures from the Victorian era? Accept it, move on, let's write the awesome crossovers.

Also, I am predisposed to adore Joanne Kelly, who plays Myka, because she was in Slings and Arrows! She played the actress who played Juliet in Darren Nichols' truly ill-omened production of "Romeo and Juliet." Even if I didn't already lke the actress, though, I think I'd love the character, because she's adorable. And also completely badass. I approve of these two things in combination.

In fact, I love everybody on the show. Even Pete, who is a bit of a dudebro, has thoroughly grown on me, and he and Myka are a delight to watch as a completely platonic broTP and a fantastic partnership. Plus, Claudia, resident technogeek and lone hi-tech operator in a world of steampunk! Artie, who is astonishingly hardcore under his cuddly exterior and crankiness! Mrs. F, who is like the lovechild of Amanda Waller and Batman! Leena, with her psychicness and snark!

And I maybe kind of rushed through season one just so I could check out this H.G. Wells person about whom I have heard so much. I am intrigued. :P And astonished that there isn't more H.G./Magnus fic out there, because, wow. Those two would have some truly amazing conversations, what with Magnus having lived through all the time H.G. missed out on.

Plus the artifacts are just fantastic. I think my favourite so far has been Sylvia Plath's typewriter, though the dodgeball comes a close second. The showriters have a great, silly sense of humour. I am thoroughly enjoying catching up. Not to mention: majority female cast, multiple characters of colour, and some pretty awesomely feminist themes. Oh, and some great Canadian Actor Bingo opportunities. :)

(I am slightly spoiled for... that thing that happened in the s4 premiere that is likely to have made me want to catch up... but I am not spoiled for anything else between s2 and now. ahem.)

And now I desperately need to go buy some food, because all I have in the house at the moment are oranges and grapes. And then back to watching tv. I mean, compiling my bibliography. Well, maybe both
