Thirteen Things I Love About Warehouse 13
an incomplete list in no particular order that may or may not contain thirteen items
These are not particularly spoilery, for the most part, save the last one, which is, shall we say, spoilery in a casting-related way for 4.01 and 4.02. Unless you consider it spoilery to say that Myka and H.G are totally gay for each other, in which case, sorry, I've just spoiled you. Oops.
13. The music! Holy cow, this show must have a massive music budget, because they use some seriously fantastic stuff. And I'm not just saying that because of the lolarious bow-chika-wow-wow music they played when Tricia Helfer's character showed up. :P
12. This interview from Comic-Con (note: starts halfway through because it's spoilery for the s3 finale before then):
Interviewer: So, your character and H.G. Wells...
Joanne: We're in love.
11. Claudia Donovan, techie extraordinaire. I love watching her grow into her role, love her fabulous outfits, love her buttons. I just love everything about her and how important the warehouse is to her and how brilliant she is. I particularly adore her relationship with Artie. Also: Pavlov's bell, oh my god, that fucking KILLED ME DEAD.
10. Steeeeeeve. I was all ready to hate the 'new Myka' - because, hello, the old Myka is awesome - and then they kept them both and gave Steve and Claudia such an amazing relationship! And Steve's coming out scene to Claudia was awesome - stolen straight from every queer person's life, am I right? The things that happened to him throughout the end of season three BROKE MY HEART.
10.5. Artie's secret badassitude! I was not 100% sold on Artie until he, um, took back the samurai sword from MacPherson, at which point I flailed like a crazy person and developed an immense amount of respect for him.
10.3. Pete! Under which I include both the person and the ferret. No, okay, i thought Pete would take forever to grow on me, but his bro-itude is just mediated enough and ironic enough and tempered enough by his general good nature that he really works for me, and I love how he loves Myka.
9. Leena. I am thrilled she is a principal character. I was afraid she'd show up once in the pilot and then be gone, but I'm glad she hasn't disappeared! I would like to see her get more to do, and I think that is happening.
9.5. Mrs F! i said last post that she was like the secret lovechild of Batman and Amanda Waller, and now I find that the actress has voiced The Wall in the animated verse, which just makes sense. Her creepy warehous emojo is fascinating and I am so looking forward to seeing what happens with her this season.
8. The casting! Not only are there a plethora of Canadian Actor Bingo opportunities, but there are such fantastic Sci-Fi Actor Bingo opportunity (and, of course, places where the Venn diagram overlaps there). Huge ridiculous amounts of points for the Firefly casting, and MASSIVE LOVE for all the Trek actors who keep showing up!
7. I don't know when the writers started deliberately playing up the H.G./Myka, but the structural parallels are fantastic. I mean, let's look at "For the Team" - Pete and Kelly get together, Artie and Vanessa get together, and... H.G. and Myka start bonding, with gifts. The "Vendetta" previously - Pete and Kate, Claudia and Todd, Myka and H.G.. Pete and Kelly break up the same ep that H.G. and Myka are... forcibly removed from each others' presence. Myka's flashback to the grappling hook as her favouritest Warehouse memory. Mya's constant references to H.G. even when she's got nothing to do with the case (4.02: "aything strange... like a ladle?"/"I know what it's like to have that much grief..."). ALL THE EYESEX AND THE FEELINGS. SHOW.
6. THE GRAPPLING HOOK GETS ITS OWN POINT. And the way Myka basically carries it with her on all the missions and defends it when people comment and it saves her life and I am a little overinvested in it but it is such a delightful metaphor. "You were coveting my grappler." NAH NOT MYKA NOPE.
5. The entirety of the warehouse plot in "Love Sick." I like the main plot too, especially Doctor Vanessa and Claudia bonding over pop culture references that Artie doesn't get, but:
- Disney's paintbrush! Nixon's shoes! Which let you TELL LIES, because of course they do.
- Pete's reaction to Steve coming out essentially being Dude! Awesome! Check out my guns!
- THEY BRONZED STEVE AS A PRACTICAL JOKE.
- The least likely thing in a warehouse full of possibilities being the idea that Myka and Pete would ever sleep together. :D :D :D
All of that, all together, is just ridiculously awesome.
4. Myka. Myka Myka Myka MYKA MYKA. I don't know if I'm in the fannish minority for loving her the bestest, but I don't CARE because she is ADORABLE and BADASS and BRILLIANT.
- She saves the world with Shakespeare!
- She speaks a bazillion languages because she's memorised them out of books!
- Her hair is so fantastic when it's not straightened. Except when it's ridiculous. But even then it is fantastically ridiculous.
- She has a tentacle phobia.
- She and Pete are such platonic lifemates.
- She has so many feelings about how to deal with H.G.
- She wears some really ridiculous glasses.
3. H.G.. Okay just becase I love Myka best doesn't mean that I don't love H.G., because I do. I particularly love how complex she is allowed to be. She breaks my heart all the time.
- Flirt with all the Victorian ladies? FLIRT WITH ALL THE VICTORIAN LADIES.
- Pocketwatch and vest, cough, enough said.
- The way she looks at Wooley and says "The future is going to be incredible!" and then I wibble a lot.
- Her and Myka in the woods in the season three finale. Too many feelings!
- Her relationship with Kataranga!
2. The football is an artifact tracker. The football is an artifact tracker. That has got to be one of the best uses of a multi-season running joke that I have ever seen.
1. The season three finale killed off the show's two canonically queer characters and then the first two episodes of season four BROUGHT THEM BOTH BACK. Millions of tiny hearts. TINY HEARTS.
Two things I don't love about W13, just to round out the list:
1. If you're going to have a character compare their father to a Pat Conroy novel (complete with having the pertinent ep feature a high school football player whose team is the Tigers, which made me do things with my face), then there really needs to be more follow-through. I'm just saying.
2. Okay, this is more about the fandom, but if I read another fic where someone is trying to talk about the poor sexually repressed Victorians, I am going to beat them about the head with Foucault's History of Sexuality. I'M JUST SAYING, OKAY, you don't need to be able to cite the book but come on.
Ahem.
Anyways so I kind of like this show, eh? I feel bad not having an icon for it on DW, but you can always click through to LJ until I have a chance to re-up my account here (which is unlikely to happen given the amazing shoes I just bought...)
