OMGWTF SCIFI.

Sci Fi Channel announced BSG prequel-slash-spinoff "Caprica."

To quote:

The people of the Twelve Colonies are at peace and living in a society not unlike our own, but where high-technology has changed the lives of virtually everyone for the better. But a startling breakthrough in robotics is about to occur, one that will bring to life the age-old dream of marrying artificial intelligence with a mechanical body to create the first living robot -- a Cylon. Following the lives of two families, the Graystones and the Adamas (the family of William Adama, who will one day become the commander of the Battlestar Galactica) Caprica weaves corporate intrigue, techno-action and sexual politics into television's first science fiction family saga.

Apparently it hasn't officially been picked up, it's just in development, but RDM and Eick are both involved. Part of me thinks this could be bad and overly soapy - and also, it's not often a good thing when creators split their attention between two or more shows - but part of me is geeking out like whoa over all the Colonial background we'd get in this. Heeee. And also all the families we'd probably get to see in the background. And previous presidencies and stuff like that.

And, you know, Cylon creation- and God-related stuff. Heh.

I am less worried about canon, actually, since RDM and Eick are the creators here as well. Of course, they're not exactly canon sticklers, but hopefully it'll have less of a drift. Mostly I'm worried about stupidity. ;)

Oh, good point. And if memory serves correctly, RDM was good at sticking to canon when he was with TNG et al.

Delayed reaction: Ummm....yeeeaaahh...this could be excellent...provided they don't mess it up. I am worried, like you mentioned, of them dividing their attention between two shows.

BUT...I would LOVE to see more of a backstory!!!

I suppose it's probably because I find Tigh so incredibly gross. I mean, I'd rather not imagine him having sex at all, thankyouverymuch, much less with...*shudder*. But to analyze it further, I'd have to take it out and look at it some more, and it HURTS when I do that. ;-)

To say something serious about this, though, mark me down as one of the concerned ones. I can see the desire to tell more varied stories in this incredibly rich universe, but why not make it a made-for-tv movie? Do they really have to jump straight to a series that has the potential to suck all their attention away from the other one (cf. Buffy, Angel)?

*nods* It worked so well when they started BSG with a mini, I don't know why they're not going that route here. It would make a lot of sense. I have to admit, though, my excitement about the potential of worldbuilding is outweighing my worries, at least till we get more info.
