Aaaand in a stunning display of inevitability that should surprise exactly no one, my brand new - less than a month old! - iPod just gave up the ghost.

LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT MY HISTORY WITH THE IPOD TOUCH, INTERWEBS.

1: Got free with purchase of my MacBook in August 2008. Lasted until about June 2009, at which point the headphone jack became unreliable. Under warranty; replaced.

2: Replacement. Had the same problem as 1 within a matter of days. Returned to store; under warrantly; replaced.

3: Replacement. Had the same problem as 1 and 2. Returned to store; salesman started flirting with me; replaced.

4: Replacement. Screen froze within a couple of days. Returned to store; salesman asked me out; replaced.

5: Replacement, July 2009. Lasted until July 2010 before developing the same headphone-jack problem. Out of warranty; said fuckit; bought new.

6: New. Bought August 2010. Now doing something truly bizarre where it spontaneously develops the idea that it should not be broadcasting sound, or something. It is at least a new problem? THIS one is under warranty, obvs. And maybe if I wait a bit, I can get a new one for the replacement?

Why, you will be asking, do I stick with the iPod when they are clearly kind of obnoxious? Well, when it's WORKING, it does everything I need it to, from scheduling to movies to interaction with the treadmills at my gym. It would be extremely obnoxious to try and replace it with something else. But I am pretty goddamn sure that this is its last chance.

(service on this and on my laptop has always been quick, pleasant, and lovely, though, at least when I'm not getting hit on by the techs.)

All of my iPods have died within a year of purchase. That's life expectancy. Two classics and a Nano.

After that I got a Creative Zen and it lasted nearly two years before dying of natural causes.

Got a Nano, put it in the washing machine, not its fault.

Got a Touch, died within three WEEKS. Replaced under warranty. Currently it's doing okay--I DID buy a case and a screen protector for it (which I change about once a month.) That seems to help it.

It is a perfect, beautiful creature, and I read fic on it every night and get the weather and listen to music and read twitter and surf the web endlessly.

But it comes with a price. I see you've been in the club paying that price a long time. :)

My Palm Centro is also amazing, has lasted twice as long, and is covered in tape to hold it together.
