[in praise of secret six]

Why do I not yet have Secret Six icons? Must fix this.
Reasons why I love Secret Six, as demonstrated by issue 13:
1. Nicola Scott
I love Nicola's art: it's great for the book, and I think underrated. I'd love to see her do more stuff (but she should never leave SS). She's an equal opportunity cheesecake-er: she's given us naked Catman, naked Bane, naked Jeannette, and, of course, Scandal in polka-dot boxers. But my favourite thing about her art is her tendency for visual gags. This issue we get a flashback to baby!Scandal and her father, in one of his houses somewhere in Brazil (I assume). He's decorated it with all of the art he's collected over his immortal lifetime. What's one of the pieces?

You throw me the idol, I throw you the whip! Yes, Vandal Savage owns the Chachapoyan fertility idol from Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. I'm sure some of the other pieces were references I didn't get, but this? Made of win.
2. Gail Simone
So there's this new secondary character who has now, counting this issue, appeared in three of the thirteen issues this run. I was thrilled to see her back and find out that she's still at least sort of involved with one of the Sixers. "Gee," I thought, "I hope that relationship gets to go somewhere before the secondary female character gets refrigerated." And then I paused and went: waitaminute. If there's any comics writer I can count on not to create a character just to kill her off, it's Gail Simone, who coined the term 'women in refrigerators' before she even started writing comics. I don't always love Gail's work, but where I feel she sometimes falls down is in plotting: she does, however, write some of the best characters ever. And she treats them all with respect.
3. Ragdoll
I feel if you're reading the comic, this needs no explanation; if you're not, you should be. *g*

WONDER RAGDOLL <3333333

Date: 2009-09-18 11:45 am (UTC)Well, defend her honour for the second time! (I had to reread issue 8 last night...) But yes, she needs to swoop back in there and kick Randall's creepy card writing stalker behind. ...I'm really looking forward to how happy Liana is when Scandal gets back. What Grendel??
Most male villains would almost pass out from the joy of having an unconscious Wonder Woman, and Ragdoll wants to put on her boots. ♥ You have got to love someone like that.

omg yes, I just had to go re-read 8 now that you mentioned it. Scandal in love/lust is ADORABLE and I want mooooore.
Ragdoll is so amazingly twisted. I love how the rest of the team just takes him at face value, to, like: of course he's playing dressup with Wondy's costume, don't we have better things to think about? *G*
