...dude, BSG spoilers already? That's just rubbing salt in the wound, you know.

Which is to say, OMG MYTHOLOGY KINK OMG OMG and, um, also other plotty stuff happens! Definite major s3 spoilers ahoy!

(links courtesy [livejournal.com profile] ariestess, thanks!)

First, premiere spoilers here at GateWorld.
Then there is discussion in this post of spoilers from one of the S2D podcasts, which covers up to ep 4 or 5 of s3.

That said.

I am generally pleased! These spoilers are fitting right into the mental mytharc I see this show loosely following, which I'm not going to write about because there is no real way to write about it until the show is over but I do want to do it then. That's my general response. Now for specifics. Which may be far too specific for some people. *g*

Dear BSG, your mythology is showing. Direct from the GateWorld spoilers: D'Anna Biers (Lucy Lawless) enters an Oracle's tent to visit Selloi Dedona, a frail old woman who is not well. OK, mythology lesson time! Dodona - A place in Greece that was originally home to a pre-Hellenic Mother Goddess cult, which Zeus eventually took over in consort with Dione, who is variably Aphrodite's mother or a Titan. The Zeus cult focussed on the worship of a sacred oak (on which, mythology has it, a dove from Egypt settled and proclaimed that the worship of Zeus and Amon must begin there). Selloi - the priests of that cult, who lay barefoot on the ground and interpreted the oracles based on the way the wind passed through the oak leaves.

I am way interested that we're getting a reference to an oracle of Zeus, as opposed to one of Apollo (although they're still emphasizing the chamalla as aid to prophecy, tying back to the Oracle at Delphi, and I am especially intrigued that they're pointing out that chamalla is still available). Also - the oracle of Zeus with ties to Amon reveals the continued existence of the child named Hera and also known as Isis? Subtlety, thy name is NOT Ron Moore.

Also, OH HEY THERE is that Laura being parallelled with D'Anna, yet another lovely blonde Cylon? Why yes, yes it is. And D'Anna doesn't believe in the Lords of Kobol or in her own god, eh? And she "shares the same flaw as the legendary Medusa" - which was disrespecting the gods, basically: Medusa slept with Poseidon in Athena's temple, which so infuriated the goddess that she cursed Medusa and her sisters. Iiiiinteresting. The question is, which god/s is D'Anna going to piss off? Also, I really love the Cylon-Gorgon sisters parallel, given that the Graeae (my spelling is SO OFF there) were the ones who had but one tooth and one eye to share between them. I want to think more about the "fatal flaw" of Medusa, though, because if I remember right, there was a lot of boastfulness taking place in her battle with Perseus, and all the Greek myths do love their hubris, so, who knows.

BY THE WAY, little-known Gorgon myth. *dances gleefully* You may or may not know that Pegasus - that would be the horse, not the battlestar - sprang from Medusa's blood. But what you probably don't know, unless you are a geek like me, is that the blood of a Gorgon has two distinct properties. If drawn from the Gorgon's left side, it is a very fast-acting poison. If drawn from her right side, it can bring the dead back to life. Wait, yes, I said BLOOD BRINGING THE DEAD BACK TO LIFE, yes I did. It was Gorgon blood that eventually served as Asclepius's undoing - I think he tried to do too much with what he was given by Athena? But I could be wrong. Either way, I cannot believe I didn't remember that. *flails a little* (I should note that the healing properties are probably better known than the duality and/or the poisonous aspect.)

OMG ELLEN NO. NO NO NO. I so don't want her to die. She's so fun and skanky and seriously, the best comic relief the show has (and I suspect they're going to want some). The whole her frakking Brother Cavil thing and the way it's discussed in the spoilers? Suggests that maybe she's doing it as a distraction or something. I'm not sure what I think of that - I like the idea that she's trying to get info or whatever from one of her husband's captors, but I also really like her as the totally immoral skank. So. I don't want her to die a HERO OMG, but I don't want her to be tossed away. *shakes fist*

Speaking of Tigh, I am emphatically a-squee about the idea of Tigh's eye being put out, because, again, mythology kink. *giggles* I mean, poor guy, but he does kind of remind me of Polyphemus, even leaving aside the entire "I shall trick you by getting you drunk!" bit.

And of course I love that both Laura and Tory are involved in the rebellion and still working together. We don't get much about that, but yeah, just the idea makes me oh-so-happy. Although I hope Anders got rid of that cough of his before he started to do sneaky rebellion-type missions.

Also, the idea of double agents kind of tickles my fancy and makes me wonder if there could be triple agents in there anywhere, as we're given the info that not all the Cylons are in agreement, and both D'Anna and Leoben apparently play large parts. I suspect not - probably the "not in agreement" stuff refers to Caprica - but wouldn't it be cooool?

I am UNHEALTHILY EXCITED about this show.

In related news, the first BSG novel has a release date, and I may have just made an embarassing squeaky noise at finding out that Peter David is writing the second one. (Plus comics soon! *geeksquee*)

I need a specifically Greek mythology-squee Laura icon, I think.
