Hmm, I have a different take on Katie (I've seen one fewer episode than you have, though, so forgive me if this doesn't bear out for episode three). I don't find her annoying, but I do think we're meant to realize that she's psychopath like Paul, not just a stupid teenager. I kind of think she might play a major role in getting him put away in the end, too, which would be an interesting way to take things: the young girl who's just like him is the one place he meets his match.
