DOCTOR WHO!!1!
This is the season of "...and how did they get that past the censors?" I'm so used to innuendo that it wasn't till I was going to sleep that I really twigged quite how salacious some of that was. Well done, the Moff!
the Doctor under that lady's skirt? "I'm a screamer"? Mrs. Robinson?
To get them out of the way, a few things I didn't like:
Okay, the conversation between Rory and River was epic and painful to watch, but a) there is no way that she and the Doctor can actually have a temporally inverse relationship (if nothing else, the Singing Towers and the screwdriver change that) and b) I hate the idea that River met the Doctor when she was "a young girl." I choose to believe that either she is very long-lived, or she is exaggerating (I still use the term "girl" for women my age, sometimes...). ALSO, the whole thing about "I think it's going to kill me" puts a very icky spin on River's death for me: not that she died to save the Doctor and everyone else, but that she killed herself because she thought/knew she'd never see him again. Do not like.
Also, I do not want a pregnant Amy, but I also don't believe that's true (although I called it as a possibility from the second the Doctor said she'd put on a few pounds). What's up with River being ill after seeing the Silence as well, then? (I had a moment of wondering whether they were going to go for a creepy Alien-style impregnation storyline for the Silent, but I think that would be a wee bit far for a family show, yes?)
The rest of it, I looooooooooved, especially:
RIVER SONG. Who is awesome and epic and adorable and how does her hair do that. Must admit I didn't expect the flirting to be dialled up to (ahem) eleven quite so quickly, but I love it, especially the quiet bits where he is just dying to find a way to touch her.
I got an email from
ladyvivien minutes into the show that just said LOL RIVER SONG IS PACKING. And this is why she and I are friends. :DDD Loved that line. The poor Stormcage guards.
The faked regeneration scene was genius. We were all going "No, wait, but Matt Smith is signed on for a whole nother series, right? Right?" Which of course he is, but in the moment we were totally wondering whether they could have faked us out, so I call that a win.
I loved the interplay between the Doctor setting the TARDIS controls and River fixing them, especially when it turned out that he ws counting on her to do so. Also, when the Doctor says "Make it blue again," was I the only one who thought about "Make it pink!"/"Make it blue!" from Sleeping Beauty? :D
On how my thesis colours my thinking: everyone is saying that Canton's line about how it would have been a crime to get married means that he's queer. I totally didn't read it that way: my first thought was "Awwww, poor FBI agent in love with a Russian spy!" (Obvs I hope everyone else is right.)
The Silent are CREEEEPY. Especially in the tunnel with River - scared the shit out of me hen her torch beam hit them. Also creepy that they seem to be telepathic or something. Loved Amy being awesome again and taking a picture of the one with her phone.
Doctor: "Jefferson, Adams, Hamilton... River?"
River: "Surnames of three of America's founding fathers."
Doctor: "Lovely fellows, two of them fancied me!"
Us: ...so, this is never actually getting shown on Americna tv, right?
SO MUCH FLIRTING. SO MUCH.
"We're in a box that's bigger on the inside and it travels through time and space... how long have Scotland Yard had this?" LOL.
Everyone brought the acting, so much. Alex! Karen! Arthur! And Matt being not only old, but older when e was older... how does he do that? (ALSO OLDER DOCTOR HAD A DIARY OF HIS OWN :DDDDD LOVE IT. EASTER ISLAND STATUES.)
I see the school bus number was 51. Foreshadowing much?
I cannot wait to see the end of this, and I'm probably going to hold out on that before I think seriously about the story, but I hear huuuuuge amounts of it echo throughout the season, so. Excited. (And unspoiled, mostly, fyi.) Very happy to see this back on my screen. :D
