fandom year in review

Your main fandom of the year?
Um. Amanda Tapping's face? This counts as a fandom, right?

Your favorite tv show of the year?
Warehouse 13 and The Good Wife, depending. W13 in a more lighthearted way and TGW in a more serious way. Kind of. Except when they weren't. Yeah, I know.

Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
Warehouse 13, hands down, in terms of sharing and reading and writing and squeeing.

Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
God, the New 52. It just keeps killing my soul. Specifically Wonder Woman, which I still cannot get past my periodic fits of rage to really read, and which is colouring my interest in the whole rest of the range. I'm months behind on everything except Sword of Sorcery (AMETHYST!), even Batwoman. Blargh, DC, why you gotta make me so sad?

Your fandom boyfriend of the year?
I guess it's Pete from Warehouse 13? He is my favouritest of all the dudebros on tv right now, and I did write a pretty decent fic from his POV. I have a feeling that this answer next year might involve comicsverse Hawkeye or Iron Man, though *shocker*.

Your fandom girlfriend of the year?
Aaaaaaugh Helena Myka Sam augh. Definitely Sam Carter for the first half of the year (please see above, re face, Amanda Tapping's). After that – Myka and Helena, maybe slightly more Helena if only because I want to be Myka more? (Helen Magnus is not on this list because Sanctuary was more last year, but also because I'm not sure 'girlfriend' would ever be the right word...)

Your biggest squee moment of the year?
Okay, threefold. One, totally cheating, but sharing mostly W13 squee but also Good Wife squee with massive amounts of people both online and in person. It had been a while since I had ongoing shows that multiple friends were watching and it was great! My novel-length emails to [personal profile] sophia_gratia while I crammed three seasons of W13 into a week were awesome. Two, discovering that the W13 cast and crew ship H.G./Myka too! :P (Definitely scissory oh Jo.)

Three, okay, picture the scene: a few weeks ago, it's probably 11, 11.30 at night, I'm in bed, and I get a series of texts as follows:

(at which point I'm thinking SHIT WHO DIED)
you have to download Avengers Assemble 7 RIGHT NOW and read it
I'm dying of laughter over the Jess and Hulk scenes

...yeah. So I downloaded the issue and there is one scene with Jessica Drew (Spider-Woman) and the Hulk that is just pants-wettingly funny AND really impressively respectful of and interestingly engaged with Jess's past. I was up past midnight texting Alex about it, and "Hulllllkkk, make me a sandwich" has joined the ranks of our food-related quotes from comics in everyday conversation (previously only "You may have one ice cream of your choice, Scandal Savage. One" which... you might be surprised how often we say.) That was pretty great.

The most missed of your old fandoms?
SANCTUARY. Yeah yeah, I know, it was barely an old fandom seeing as how I only got into it in November 2011, but it got cancelled and I'm sad so it counts so there. Also, DC Comics, sigh.

The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?
Huh, I don't know if I have an answer for this! I want to try and MAKE there be a Code Name Verity fandom, does that count?

Your biggest fan anticipations for the coming year?
Surprisingly, a lot of Marvel comics. I am enjoying Matt Fraction's Hawkeye and LOVING Kelly Sue DeConnick's Captain Marvel and Avengers Assemble – really looking forward to what she does with more Jessica Drew and with Natasha Romanov. I am also looking forward to s4.5 of Warehouse 13 because I miiiissssss ittttttt, and to Defiance because I've read some of the sides and am FULL OF SQUEE for what I know is coming up.

Total stories: sixteen
Total wordcount: 32,967 (quite a bit more unfinished/unposted, boo)
Total fandoms: six
Fandom with the most: Warehouse 13, with five finished
Fandom with the least: Cannot answer till post-Yuletide

Het: 1
Boyslash: 0
Femslash: 12
Gen: 6
(...some of them defy categorization a bit)

Leitmotif(s) of the year:
...ladies are awesome? (This holds true in my Yuletide fics as well.)

Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted?
I don't know what I predicted, but when I popped over to AO3 to see how much I had written and whether it was worth doing one of these, I was really surprised at how high my wordcount was. It feels like I haven't written anything at all for a few months. Apparently I have!

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you never would have predicted in January 2012?
Well, I was aware of these stories that kept floating by on the newsletters tagged "H.G./Myka," but I didn't really have any interest in the fandom... yeah, THAT lasted. I would put Stargate in here, but frankly I'm pretty sure that was a foregone conclusion due to aforementioned problems of Amanda Tapping's face, and also how Sam Carter is awesome.

Your best story of this year:
I think "The One I Wanted" is the one that came out closest to how I wanted it to be. Well, that and "Diplomatic Relations."

What’s your favorite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.
Of the stuff I finished and posted, the second part of "here where secrets hardly keep." I love Warehouse 12-era Helena, and Woolly, and some of the artifacty magic I got to put in. My very favourite so far is one that I haven't finished, but that is another of the Canadian artifact pseudo-series I'm working on.

Okay, NOW your most popular story.
Based on AO3 hitcount and kudos, that's "All Time High." Who doesn't love a bit of exhibitionistic Mile High Club fic, I guess?

Story of yours most underappreciated by the universe, in your opinion:
I think "Recursion." I guess I understand why – it's fic set in a one-episode canon AU without any really popular pairings – but I think it's one of my better stories, with loads of layers to it and also some decent writing, and it pretty much slipped under the radar. Sigh.

Story that could have been better?
I wish my assigned Yuletide fic was better. I came up with a great idea in the middle of writing it!... that would have taken a lot of time to put together. I don't think it's bad, but it's not what I wanted to write when I got the assignment. My Yuletide treat was also a bit rushed, but I think it's okay.

Most fun story to write:
"Zip It!" Pete's voice is hilarious, the concept still makes me giggle, and I got to do Canadiana research! Win-win!

"Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story:
I don't think any of them are wrong! A couple of the H.G./Myka ones might fall under that just in terms of sex being used to sublimate some serious issues, but even that doesn't really count.

Sexiest story?
There are a number that are more explicitly pornographic, but in terms of sexiest I am going to pick a lower rated one and say "Rimininny!" is my personal choice for sexiest. Well, there is a reason I have a 'reading's a sexual preference' tag on here.

Saddest story?
Yuletide story #2. *clutches heart* That's more the fault of the canon, to be fair, but I have had several commenters tell me it's left them weeping. Also, "here where secrets hardly keep" is quite sad, because Helena has some angst going on.

Sweetest story?
Oh man, "Point and Click" is probably the sweetest and fluffiest. Sam and Janet need sweet and fluffy in their lives!

Hardest story to write:
I had a heck of a time with "the infinity of ghosts," because my femslash12 recipient explicitly requested no porn – and it's not that I can't write gen fic, but more that I wanted to tell pornier stories about those particular ladies. :P

Easiest story to write?
Probably "Memory to Spare." I started it as a total piece of self-indulgence and didn't think it was all that great (which, since I wasn't sure I was going to share it, made it very freeing to write), and then [personal profile] sophia_gratia convinced me it was worth posting. It's a bit stream-of-consciousness, but I think that works for it.

Biggest surprise:
Writing a Warehouse 13 fic from Pete's POV? Oh god boy cooties ew ew ew. ;)

Most unintentionally revealing story:
See above re: sexiest fic, "Rimininny!", 'reading's a sexual preference' tag? That wasn't all that unintentional, I guess, though. :P

Story that shifted your own perception of the characters:
Actually, Yuletide story #1, my original assignment, so I really hope that came across. Reviewing the canon made me think about the minor characters who shared the profession of one of the main characters, and how all the minor characters were portrayed, and whether that could maybe say something about the main character that we hadn't really seen yet. So it's a little dark, and a little challenging. I hope.

Where did you publish/archive your stories?
All on AO3. Most here on DW/LJ as well.

Story you haven't yet written, but intend to:
I don't know if there's anything I haven't started that I plan to write. Wait: at some point I will absolutely write a Sanctuary/Warehouse 13 crossover. I will.

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
...I don't think I did. I pushed myself to write longer fic and learned that I suck at plotting? Other than that, not really.

Do you have any fanfic goals for the New Year?
Maybe it should be that I take some writing risks? Write more, though, really. Or maybe I should aim to write longer. A fic over 10,000 words, perhaps? HM. :P
