Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted?
I challenged myself at the beginning of this year to write at least twelve fics and 25,000 words total, and I cleared those goals quite comfortably (not even counting the three unfinished fics I have in my notebook). I'm really surprised, actually – I didn't think I'd make it, much less surpass it! Thanks to River Song being awesome, though... ;)

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January 2010?
I never in a zillion years would have guessed that I'd get back into Doctor Who after not having written in it since 2006.

What’s your favorite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.
Ummmm, my favourite favourite is one of the "For the Fairest" series that isn't posted yet, ahahah. But, okay, of the ones that I did finish... possibly "The Ice-Puzzle," because I like how it turned out, even if I didn't get quite as much fairytale in there as I really wanted. I think "every new verse," as well, because it tied in to the lovely video [livejournal.com profile] beccatoria made, used one of my favourite songs, and contrasted two different aspects of the River/Doctor relationship in a way I still quite like.

Okay, NOW your most popular story.
Going by comments on LJ, my most popular story is "If That's All We Have," which shocks the hell out of me. It's a mostly-gen series of ten drabbles about Elizabeth Burke from White Collar, and yet it got more attention than my porny threesome fics in the same fandom! (To be fair, if I went back to the original comments in the Porn Battle where some of the White Collar threesome fics were posted and added up the responses there, they might bump the gen fic. But I think that the responses I got to the Elizabeth gen were more positive, too, in very different ways from just "omg hot.")

Story most underappreciated by the universe?
I think Yuletide Story #1 deserves more love than it's getting. I really like it – I think it's smart and funny and sexy. But it is in a teensy fandom. (There are several other fics in that fandom, though! And I've commented on many of them! So perhaps I am allowed my annoyance?)

Story that could have been better?
Yuletide Story #2 (wow, these answers will be a lot better after the reveal, eh?). I turned it over in my head from the very day I got the assignment, but didn't quite manage to pull anything out of my hat until after the original deadline. I could have used even just another day to fact-check and pad its bones. It's not bad, though, and the recipient loved it, so yay!

Sexiest story?
I don't know! I seem to be moving away from explicitly sexy stories (um, to an extent, she says, looking at her plans for next year). Maybe "Dining In"? The sexy ones I mostly had to work for, which makes it hard for me to go back and judge their sexiness. *g* I think Yuletide Story #1 might fit, though I tried for sensual more than sexual, with that one.

Story with single sweetest moment?
I think "The Ice-Puzzle," which has River going to elaborate lengths to construct a little present for the Doctor simply because he'll enjoy it (and then getting a Doctor who's much earlier in the timeline than she necessarily wanted, which means she doesn't get the same sort of pleasure out of things, but she doesn't complain). I would also say that "And One More For the Road" has Kalinda being incredibly sweet in a way that isn't really immediately apparent to anyone else. Oh, and "For the Fairest 2: The Fortunate Isle" has the Doctor giving up a hundred years of his life for River, which is pretty sweet.

Saddest story?
Hmmm, probably "Retrospective," which is about River realizing the end of her relationship with the Doctor. "Too Too Solid Flesh" might be a contender, but it's a bit too emo. *g*

Hardest story to write?
"Sunstruck" – it's an Amy/River fic, and I really, desperately hate the genre of Amy/(mostly River, but probably also others) that goes "Actually, Amy decided she'd never loved Rory" or "And Rory died a horrible death" or whatever. I also didn't want to write a story where half of it was taken up by describing how Amy and Rory had actually usefully decided they were in an open relationship and so it didn't matter! I think [personal profile] zulu suggested I went with a sex pollen-type story, but even with that it took me quite a while to figure out just how I wanted things to work.

Easiest story to write?
Yuletide Story #1 basically just flowed out of my pen in its entirety the day I got the assignment. I went back to do some canon-checking and did a little editing, but it is mostly exactly as I originally wrote it. It helps that it was on a subject with which I am intimately familiar (it's got spies in it, shhhh, don't tell).

Most overdue story?
It took me ages to get around to "The Ice-Puzzle" – but seeing as how I still have to finish a fic that I have owed [personal profile] zulu for months, that probably has to take the cake. *ducks* I just finished "Footnotes," which had been germinating since August, but there are two more in my notebook from around that time, too.

Most fun story?
I enjoyed the hell out of plotting all five "For the Fairest" stories and then writing particularly the first one. It's got some great technobabble, I think the relationship between river and Ten is really fun, and it has River Song slaying a dragon. Love it.

"Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story:
In terms of waaaaaay-out-there pairing, Yuletide Story #2 is so very wrong in so many ways, but I love it. And that's why I had to write it – because before I saw the request, I didn't believe that anyone else even saw the pairing at all!

Story that shifted your own perceptions of the characters:
I think finishing "Footnotes," largely because I started it in August and then picked it back up this week in an attempt to nudge myself over that 40,000 word goal, has demonstrated to me that my perception of River has changed in the interim. It started off as a fic about, basically, how much River missed the Doctor while she was in prison, but when I went back to it it became a story about River's capabilities and desires and how she survives in prison. I think this is not really a surprise, but it pointed out to me how much I don't want to just write shippy fic for River and how important it always is to make sure that the power balance doesn't shift too far in favour of the Doctor when writing River.

Biggest surprise:
Heeee, my biggest surprise was writing "Dining In" as my first White Collar story – because as I put it, I was finally in a fandom where the guys were so boyfriends even I could see it, and yet the first fic I wrote for it was femslash. ...wait, maybe that's not so big a surprise after all. ;)

Most unintentionally revealing story:
Well, taken together, I think "Book of the Dead," "Holding Up the Heavens," and "The Fortunate Isle" reveal that I am a gigantic geek for classical history and myth, but that is perhaps not shocking. Um, both "Book of the Dead" and "And One More for the Road" reveal my tendency to want everything to happen in one giant universe full of crossover potential: in BotD, River teaches at Barnett College, where depending on timeline she could be sharing teaching duties in the archaeology department with one Henry Jones Junior (aka Indiana...); in AOMftR, Alicia and Kalinda drink at the Golden Glow, which is V.I. Warshawski's watering hole in Sara Paretsky's books. No one noticed either of those. Sadface.

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
I don't think I did! I did try to write more stories rather than vignettes, maybe? And I learned that I can come up with some really far-out fictional settings and plots?

Do you have any fanfic goals for the New Year?
I owe one fic that I need to finish asap. I want to finish the "For the Fairest" series before new Doctor Who canon comes out. I want to write more Batwoman this year (new canon yay). I would like to write the one The Closer fic that I saw in Yuletide requests and couldn't get around to. I want to do some more noodling in the 'verse of The Good Wife. I also want to try for the 12 fics, 25,000 words goal again – it worked so well for me this year! Oh, and depending on what I'm doing academically when there are appropriate Big Bangs going on, I might try and do the River Song epic I have in my mind; that's contingent on real life, though, so I'm not making it a solid goal.
Soooooo, only a little longer to guess my Yuletide fics! Hints: one is in a fandom I've already written in this year. One has spies. :D
