Alicia couldn't drink tequila any more without thinking of Kalinda.
YES.
I'd thought so from the Martha/River fic I'd read yesterday, but your first paragraph confirms it; I really enjoy your writing rhythm. There's a strong beat to it, which I feel. And there's a definite tension/conflict rolling from the very beginning, drawing the reader (me!) along.
I like that the first appearance of Kalinda is her touching Alicia's shoulder. Very intimate and protective.
"I see you started without me,"
"I'm not sure it can be considered 'starting without you' given that you weren't invited in the first place,"
BANTERRRRR (a requirement for all Alicia & Kalinda interaction!)
Awwww, Alicia subconsciously wanted Kalinda there! And, of course, Kalinda is sharp enough to catch that. ;)
"Well." Kalinda shrugged off her dark jacket, letting it hang off the back of her chair. "That depends."
That is so like them! Alicia asking and knowing Kalinda will get it, and Kalinda so direct, answering Alicia in her pragmatic, straightforward manner.
"It depends," Kalinda said precisely, "on whether you're asking what decision I'd make if I were in the same position, what decision I'd make if I were you right now, or what I'd do if I were to make the decision for you."
Unnnhhhhh I love Kalinda so much. ;___; *reads more* AHH SHE WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN IN THIS SITUATION. YEAH. Kalinda would never leave herself in such a vulnerable position! Kalinda is always checking all her bases!
"Oh, admit it, Alicia," she said. "You know you want to let him come home. You want to give him a chance to apologize, to change. You want to make your kids happy. You want to believe he wants to come home. And," she continued, "you want it to have been worth it.
...Oh, Alicia. Trying to make a crappy situation alright, trying to do right by your kids (but at what cost?).
I love that the fic ends with Alicia asking (and Kalinda answering) what Kalinda would have her do. The development of those three choices gives the fic an interesting structure. And now I must wonder: what will Alicia do? The first option (not be in the situation!) isn't possible; the second is her own inclination; but perhaps she's tempted by the third....?
I am so, so glad you pinchit for me because: a) WOOO; b) FANTASTIC ALICIA & KALINDA. You rocked them good!
