there are lots of problems with the fan history wiki (http://www.fanhistory.com/index.php/Main_Page), but if you just need any old source it (or even regular Wikipedia) might be useful. the other discussions I can think of are in books. Francesca Coppa's introduction, "A Short History of Media Fandom," in Fan Fiction and Fan Communities in the Age of the Internet is excellent. Textual Poachers and Camille Bacon-Smith's ethnography Enterprising Women have more detailed accounts of the earlier eras.
