When you see this, post excerpts from three of your works in progress, says the meme. Well, it's not quite 'when I see it,' because I had to fetch my notebook in from the car and type up a chunk of my most recent, but nevertheless. 'In progress' might be stretching it a bit too, but 'on my mind,' at least?

None of the excerpts are spoilery for their respective shows. In rough order from first started:

Scott & Bailey )

Scott & Bailey )

Last Tango in Halifax )

I still owe [personal profile] soupytwist a ficlet, but I haven't started it yet. *looks cute*
tellitslant: (bond - bond/m - i miss the cold war)
Fandom this year: not enough fic-writing. My AO3 stats say I've written just over 23,000 words. On the other hand, that's better than last year, and my god this was a shit year all around. Plus, frankly, the amount of texting Soph and I have done probably brings that up a lot. I mean. A LOT. As always, though, next year, more writing, I hope!

Your main fandom of the year?
Let's call it the Sally Wainwright-verse: the not-actually-interconnected tv trilogy of Scott & Bailey, Last Tango in Halifax, and Happy Valley. I haven't been particularly fannishly productive about Happy Valley, I suppose, largely because it is kind of traumatising, but in terms of mental investment these three occupy a definitely very high position in my list of fannish loves. I've only posted fic in S&B, but I have spent a... significant... amount of time building headcanons for all three. (There was a Catherine Cawood cameo in the first draft of one of my Yuletide fics, but I had to trash that, sigh.)

Your favourite film watched this year?
I didn't watch many films this year, it feels like, and I missed out on a LOT of the really big ones. That said, however, how can I give this to anything but Maleficent? It wasn't perfect, and I didn't end up as fannish about it as I'd expected, but god it made me happy. It made me happy and it didn't disappoint me. Honourable mention to Pride, which made me bawl, but yeah, Maleficent by a country mile.

Your favourite book read this year?
I hate these, because I never remember what I read from one month to the next! That said, I spent the latter half of November and first week or so of December powering through the ten volumes of Louise Penny's Three Pines series, which I could not put down. I keep meaning to read more Canadian literature, and these books really left me longing to return to Montreal and Quebec in general, plus they were excellent mysteries in a year where I rediscovered my love of the crime genre.

Your favourite album or song to listen to this year?
Hmmm. The Imelda May album "Mayhem" has barely left my car CD player since August (so disappointed that I was just too ill to watch her mainstage show at Folkfest). Taylor Swift's "1989" has been delightful. Various of Bear's Den's songs have been in heavy rotation at home. But I think 2014 has to be a year of Fleetwood Mac: "Rumours," "The Dance," "Live," and "Greatest Hits" have been in heavy rotation because – the Mac is back!

Your favourite TV show of the year?
It's so hard to pick from that trilogy listed above! Technically, Happy Valley is probably the best, and has certainly appeared on numerous best-of lists: it's tightly plotted, brilliantly acted, gut-wrenching, and very well shot and edited. But favourite? Hm. Last Tango is currently airing, which puts it front of mind, and its characters are some of the most well-rounded, fully realized around. But it is a liiittle bit soapy. Okay a lot soapy. I mean, it transcends! But. Plus I'm already angry at it for what it'll do next year. And Scott & Bailey – well, there are things I'd change, things I wish it'd done better, but as a discrete unit it may be one of my favourite shows ever. We still don't know if it'll get a fifth season, but if it doesn't, I am absolutely content with that, as the way it ended was just marvellous. So. S&B it is.

Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
Sally Wainwright and her giant evil cat and their commitment to a postfeminist genre discourse on British telly.

Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
We do not fucking speak of Warehouse 13. Go outside, turn around three times, and spit. Ptui.

Your fandom boyfriend of the year?
Did I... consume... texts... with boys in them???

Your fandom girlfriend of the year?
UGH, no! Gill Murray, with her nails and her impossible jawline? Rachel Bailey, with her smile and her recklessness? Gillian Greenwood, with her inability to keep her fingers away from her mouth? Caroline Elliot, with her DPhil and her hips and her freckles and her gorgeous kissing? Erm, yes.

Your biggest squee moment of the year?
I think probably when Maleficent queered true love's kiss. You could've knocked me over with a feather. Boom. Runners up: Scott & Bailey and past!Gill with hair down to her bum dressed all in leather; Last Tango and Caroline and Gillian and "They think I'm one of your women"; so much of Alicia's ascendance in The Good Wife; Stella and Reed kissing in The Fall.

The most missed of your old fandoms?
I miss being fannish about comics. A lot of people have really gotten into comics in my vicinity this year, and I am just... I'm reading more of them, and I'm enjoying a lot of them, but fannishly I just don't have the investment right now.

The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?
I find this question a bit funny because it assumes fannishness about the texts I plan to try. I am looking forward to watching Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, Mapp and Lucia and Manhattan.

Your biggest fan anticipations for the coming year?
Dreading the continuation of Last Tango, but anticipating fic, my own and that of anyone I can drag in kicking and screaming! A little worried about what s2 of Happy Valley might be like, but looking forward to more of Catherine and Clare (I think this is meant to be in 2015?)! More superhero movies (I'm not really invested, but I enjoy dipping in and out of the fic)! And, of course, AGENT CARTER. :D :D :D Oh, and I need to catch up on Strange Empire... and prep for X Company.
tellitslant: (bond - bond/m - i miss the cold war)
fandom year in review
I was not really tremendously fannish this year but I am doing this anyway (even though I'm not doing the fic year in review, because wow, I did not write very much fic; resolution for next year, write more fic).

Your main fandom of the year?
I don't really know! I was probably most active in Warehouse 13, but I'm not terribly into the tumblr fandom. Still, I wrote some fic and enjoyed it quite a lot, even if I've drifted a bit in the last half of the year. I guess it should probably count, though, since it's the only one where I crashed the studio on the final day of filming? :P

Your favorite tv show of the year?
It has to be The Good Wife, which came back from a good-but-not-great fourth year to blow me the fuck away throughout all of the first half of its fifth year. Every aspect of that show is just AMAZING. Shoutouts to Bomb Girls and Lost Girl, though, because homegrown Canadian awesomeness with brilliant ladies! They're tooootally different shows, and neither of them is nearly as quality as TGW, but they're good and fun and I have been really pleased to watch them.

Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
That I could still care about a character played by Mia Kirshner even after hating her as Jenny in The L Word? :P I was surprised that I liked Kenya in Defiance as much as I did – and very pleased, because it made the events I knew were coming much more engaging and interesting. So, yay for that! She is no longer tainted in my eyes! *g*

Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
Oh, the DC Universe. I cannot. I am still so sad and angry about the whole state of the reboot. I'm doing my best to read more non-DC Comics (and if you read indy comics but are not reading Sex Criminals you are WRONG IN THE FACE), but I really miss being able to care about those characters. I was whingeing on twitter about missing my identity-touchpoint characters and Gail Simone told me that one of the characters from her series The Movement reminds her of me and I still haven't been able to bring myself to read it. Ugh.

Your fandom boyfriend of the year?
Pete from W13. I mean, it just has to be Pete, because he has the BEST brotp with Myka ever and I adore it. (IDK, movieverse Tony Stark could probably go in here too.) Oooh, or I have a massive braincrush on Matt Fraction, who writes Hawkeye and Sex Criminals (though lbr, I fancy his wife waaay more *cough*).

Your fandom girlfriend of the year?
I suspect this was my answer last year, but Helena Wells! At least, I think she's the only character where I randomly text people just to tell them I'm having some feelings about her (hi, [profile] sophiagratia!). I still want to write all sorts of fic about her and hug her and give her a happy ending.

Your biggest squee moment of the year?
As a feminist, a pop culture critic, a fan of the Laurie R King Mary Russell book series, a semi-fan of the original canon, and someone who was massively hacked off at the mistreatment of the character in Sherlock... I was beyond thrilled to hear that Elementary's Moriarty was going to be not just A Woman but The Woman. The whole Moriarty arc made me just so delightfully happy. And then I really fell for her character while I was writing my Yuletide fic and oh MAN have you seen the promos for her return? WHICH BTW AIRS TOMORROW. I have a lot of feelings about her brain and her emotions and her evil plans (and, let's be honest, her face).

The most missed of your old fandoms?
I drifted away from my Stargate watch, which makes me sad. But really, hanging out with [personal profile] cyborganize at GeekGirlCon kind of made me miss BSG, not just for the people (most of the people) but for the fantastic community that was built around that show.

The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?
Although I've written in Elementary twice for Yuletide, I haven't paid much attention to it fannishly in between – I didn't even really keep up with it as it aired this autumn. I would like to do that more! I am also really looking forward to starting to watch Orphan Black and at least being able to read the fic, even if I don't get super-fannish about it.

Your biggest fan anticipations for the coming year?
More Moriarty! New Captain Marvel! New Black Widow series! More Defiance! The Captain America movie!
...oh, let's be honest: MALEFICENT COMES OUT THIS YEAR PLEASE WRITE ME ALL THE FIC.
tellitslant: amanda tapping in a field of flowers (sanctuary - a-tapps - flowers)
That top ten AO3 stories meme is going around, and I don't believe I've done it before, so why the heck not?

by hit count )
Conclusions: no one read anything I wrote in 2011.

by kudos )
Conclusions: Yuletiders give more kudos! Also femslashers. I do wonder if fandom is really slanting away from comments and towards kudos. On the other hand, I do love getting an almost-daily kudos email...

And, okay, I'm not going to do 21 last first-and-last lines (how much do people think I write? *g*), but maybe ten?

most to least recent )
Conclusions: none, really? None of these really demonstrate my penchant for semicolons; most of them are relatively short; it's actually the fics I dislike the most that I think have the best openings/closings. Hm.

Yanked from loads of people on my flist:

Comment with the name of a character in one of my fandoms, and I'll post you an instant mini-fanmix: 3-5 songs that remind me of that character. I'll upload the songs and everything.

You can request pairings as well, although I reserve the right not to be serious.

Also, I am limiting this to the first ten comments initially, assuming it gets even that much interest. Once those are done, if people are still interested, then I'll keep going.

So, this started as a "I name a character, you claim a number as listed below, I write 500 words" thing, but I like [livejournal.com profile] fox1013's version of it, where I throw it open to any female character that I can write, or that you think I can write. I think you're all probably familiar-ish with my fandoms, right? I reserve the right to ask you to make another choice if I don't think I know the character well enough. So, pick a number and give me a fandom and a female (feel free to ask for crossovers also) - but caveat lector, I don't promise serious thoughts. ;)

I have Girl Guide cookies. Score.

Also, meme, from [livejournal.com profile] fox1013:

1) Make a list of 15 characters first, and keep it to yourself for the moment. (That way you're not leading the questions asked to fit the characters.)

2) Ask your flist to post questions in the screened comments.

For example:
"4, 6, 12 & 15 are starting a band together, what is their name and what kind of music do they play? Also, who's the lead singer, and what instruments do the others play?"

3) After your flist has asked enough questions, round them up and answer them using the 15 characters you selected beforehand, and then post them.

So, question away, and I'll do the answers sometime tomorrow!

So I finally got around to doing the screencaps meme. Like [livejournal.com profile] rhipowered, I'm going to make this a contest and screen comments. The two people who get the most correct can request either an icon or a ficlet of their choice (and yes, I am working on the last round of ficlet requests). So. Thirteen movies that I watch lots.

Oh, and if the movie is part of a series, then yes, I want the correct name or number of the film.

Hi, I'm a mainstream movie consumer, how about you? )

[livejournal.com profile] silentlonging suggested the creation of an alphabetical list of literature that has influenced us somehow through our life. This is mine, although I had so many overlaps that I am tempted to try and come up with a secondary list as well. Maybe I should just call it a first draft. I've also included in brackets a rough estimate of when I first read the book, because I found it interesting myself. I'd love to see anyone else on my list do this (please link me if you do). And now I get to read other peoples' lists!

books that have stayed with me. )
