Sign ups are open, which means it's time for Dear Creator letters.

Make sure to include your AO3 username, fandoms and pairings as well as the link.

Please wait until after you have completed/unlocked your letter post, if need be, before commenting here.

You can include additional pairings in your letter if you have more than six pairings you like in a fandom. But please take care to make sure they are clearly optional and include more information about the pairings that are actually in your sign up so your creator doesn't feel bad about being unable to write a pairing if they matched with you on something else.

Please also be respectful of other participants if they have different preferences in fic and requests to you.

Sign Ups are open!

*drumroll* We're a little early again, but sign ups are now open at the 2017 AO3 Collection.

They will remain open until 6PM EDT August 23 2017 (Countdown Clock)

You must be logged into an AO3 account to sign up. Remember you can shoot us an email at femslashexmod@gmail.com and we can help you out with an invitation if you do not already have an account.

Don't forget to check out the small fandoms post for ideas and to promote your favourite fandoms.

Go over the rules one more time before starting your sign up. A quick reminder of the important points:

Requests
  • You may request four to six fandoms from the list of nominated fandoms.

  • For each request, do not forget that you can request art, fic, or both.

  • For each fandom you must request one to six pairings from the list of nominated pairings. If you choose to request any pairing, double-check the list of nominated pairings for that fandom and make certain that any of the pairings listed are all right by you.

  • Your match will be based on fandom, pairing, and format (i.e. fic or art).

  • While the description section is optional, we strongly suggest you include Do Not Wants. Any DNWs/triggers included in the description will be enforced by the mods, however all other details will be optional for your writer or artist. You can also include a link to a Dear Creator letter if you would like to provide more information.

Offers
  • You may offer four to ten fandoms from the list of nominated fandoms.

  • Each fandom you offer must have one to ten pairings from the list of nominated pairings. If you choose to offer any pairing, double-check the list of nominated pairings for that fandom and make certain that any of the pairings listed are all right by you.

  • Again, as for requests, you can offer art, fic, or both.

Don't forget...
  • Check the Uncategorised and the No Media sections of the tag set for extra fandoms, crossovers, and original work tags.

  • Occasionally, after you select a fandom, pairings you want might not appear in the drop-down menu despite already being in the tag set. If that happens, please copy and paste the pairing you want from the tag set, but remember that you need to get it exactly the same.

  • You may edit your sign up as much as you like between now and the close of sign-ups.

  • Please read over your sign-ups one last time before they close. After all, what if you ticked the wrong box?

  • If you write a Dear Creator letter, you can share them at our letters post!

  • Your assignment will need to be completed and posted by 6PM EDT on October 7. Please consider carefully whether you will be able to commit to that deadline before signing up.

Keep an eye out for the new how-to post coming over the next few days if you're new to exchanges, or drop us a comment if you have any questions.

We won a Hugo Award for Best Fanzine!

Ira and Susan on stage giving a speech with text overlaid reading This was a triumph. I'm making a note here: HUGE SUCCESS

Ira and Susan attended Worldcon 75 on our behalf (we can't even with our jealousy over Ira getting to meet Daveed Diggs). We're so grateful to everyone who nominated and voted for us this year. Thanks also to our fellow finalists, too. It was lovely being a part of a robust ballot featuring commentary and criticism from a wide range of voices. The full list of finalists and winners can be read at thehugoawards.org.

We're still reeling a bit, but we wanted to at least reach out and say THANK YOU and OMG and WHAT and THANK YOU OMG, etc. We are super honored and so excited! Congrats to US, congrats to the other winners, and thanks for liking our work! ♥ You can find the text of our speech below.

Thanks so much for this amazing award. We accept on behalf of ourselves and the four Lady Business editors who couldn't be here tonight: Clare, Jodie, KJ, and Renay.

We also want to thank everyone who has supported Lady Business throughout the years in ways large and small, including our readers, commenters, and guest columnists. Special thanks go out to John Scalzi, whose work welcomed Renay back to science fiction. Without his books Renay wouldn't have been in the SF community to start this project with our co-founders, Ana and Jodie. Thanks to Ana Grilo of The Book Smugglers for consistent support and writing opportunities, Kate Elliott and Justin Landon for believing in our work and being the best cheerleaders, and Zachariah Carlson for being our personal Shadow Broker all these years.

When Lady Business was founded, the goal was to create a safer space for discussions in a community that was still struggling to recognize white women, much less any other marginalized identities. There's still work to be done, and change has been slow, but we are thrilled our project has been a voice within this cultural shift. We are incredibly honored that the Hugo voters find our intersectional feminist work valuable, and we will keep working to remain worthy of your recognition as we move forward.

We dedicate this award to Jodie Baker and Ana Silva. Thank you very much.

Nominations are closed, the queue has been emptied and corrections have been made (if you spot any ongoing issues, your nomination hasn't appeared in the tagset, you have an opinion on the remaining unclarified Wonder Woman crossover pairings or other issues raised previously, please head over to the last wrangling post and let us know), and now we're just waiting for sign-ups to start.

So it's the perfect time to pitch your small fandoms and rare pairs to everyone!

Tell us why you love it, show us pretty pictures of your favs, link us to the canon (legal options only please), and make your best case for why someone should consider adding your fandom to their requests or offers list.

To make it easy to browse, please put the name of your fandom and/or pairing in the subject line of your comment if you're posting on Dreamwidth. If you're on Tumblr, make sure to use the femslashex tag!

And a reminder if you want to make sure you're ready for sign-ups opening but you don't have an AO3 account yet, shoot us an email at femslashexmod@gmail.com and we can help you out with an invitation.

Okay, let me take a step back, wind up, aaand — !

*GONG*

Whew. There we go. Got it. That's it for nominations, folks. Barring any weirdness, sign-ups should be open in three days, on Sunday, August 13. During the next three days, the tag set is going to undergo its final set of tweaks before we get sign-ups moving, so feel free to keep browsing it and let us know if there's weird stuff in there that we've missed. (Or just keep browsing it to bask in all the potential femslash. That's fine, too!)

It's not time to sound the gong just yet, but it is time to pick up the mallet and start taking my practice swings. Nominations close tomorrow (Thursday, August 10) at 6 PM EDT (10 PM GMT). You still have plenty of time to nominate your femslash. Thank you all for your assistance thus far in keeping our tag set cleaned up as nominations progress, and please feel free to let us know here if you have any comments, concerns, questions, etc.

Nominations are still open here.

This will likely be the last catch-all wrangling post until after nominations close on the 10th.

Ongoing issues that require input from participants and/or the original nominators include:
  • The following Wonder Woman crossover tags require clarification on which form of Diana is requested. If we don't hear from the nominators, would others agree that Wonder Woman any and then optional details apply on both sides is a good solution? Our other option is to assume the 2017 movie as that's been far and away the most popular choice.
    • Diana Prince (Wonder Woman)/Barbara Gordon (DC Comics)
    • Diana Prince (Wonder Woman)/Hermione Granger (Harry Potter)
    • Diana Prince (Wonder Woman)/Tina Goldstein (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them)
    • Peggy Carter/Diana - we have approved a 2017 version, but there was more than one nomination. If you were a nominator and wanted a different Wonder Woman variation please let us know.

  • Huuro | Elesa/Kamitsure | Skyla, Pokemon - we seem to be getting some character name word salad going on. Can the nominator confirm that they intended Kamitsure | Elesa / Fuuro | Skyla, or provide more information.

  • Cinderella/Princess Charming, Fairy Tale - this was declined as an ineligible gender swap of Prince Charming, but if there is Fairy Tale relevant canon with a female charming please let us know!

  • BanG Dream! Girl's Band Party! (Video Game) and BanG Dream (Anime) are currently approved separately but appear to have some character overlap. If anyone is familiar with both fandoms, we'd love to hear input on similarities between canons and whether it needs to be combined.

  • Marvel - we had a lot of wandering tags as always, and we think we caught and correctly associated everything, but do double check your comics vs MCU vs Netflix etc pairings are in the right spot and let us know if not so you don't get a surprise during sign ups. From here on we will duplicate, not delete, anything that's been wrongly assigned to one or the other (unless the characters don't appear in that version of canon) so if one of your pairings was already nominated you don't need to worry about it disappearing on you.

  • The following fandom combination decisions have been made, and all additions are also being noted at the first nominations post so you can view the full combined fandoms list together if you need to reference anything.
    • Once Upon a Time in Wonderland pairings are being included within Once Upon A Time
    • Disney - All Media Types is being used for all Disney pairings including Princesses
    • Ashes to Ashes and Life on Mars are combined into Life on Mars & Related Fandoms
    • The Vampire Diaries and The Originals have been combined as The Vampire Diaries & Related Fandoms
    • DC Cinematic Universe includes: Man of Steel, Batman vs Superman, Wonder Woman, Justice League, Aquaman, and Suicide Squad.

Lastly, please keep issues and corrections coming and if something in your nominations was approved or declined and doesn't appear in the tagset, let us know! Especially double check your nominations are correctly listed if you nominated for a fandom that is combined (particularly if you didn't use the already approved umbrella term, if we have declined the individual fandom it may automatically decline your pairings as well without showing them to us first), your pairing includes one or more people from one of those fandoms and might require editing to be unique, your pairing is a non-canonical tag, or if a character in your pairing has multiple names that might have gotten jumbled by AO3.

And as we're approaching the end of the nomination period, get your nominations in quick if you haven't already!

If you want to nominate or sign up and don't have an AO3 account, shoot us an email at femslashexmod@gmail.com and we can help you out with an invitation. Also a reminder to our Tumblr followers if you need help with anything that you may get a faster response by anon-commenting on Dreamwidth.

Edit: Don't forget to check the tagset before nominating if you're close to your nomination limit! I just declined three new variations of Natasha Romanov/Dottie Underwood in MCU because it's already in the tagset. Double check the existing tags first and you might find you can fit a few more pairings in.

Animal Brides

Here are six stories featuring animal brides, a trope about animals who turn into women and marry humans. Sometimes they have choice about this and sometimes the human forces them. This trope can take a lot different forms and the worlds in these stories are varied. Animal brides allow authors to explore ways women are viewed and desired. The trope lets the authors examine a variety of animals and animal archetypes. These stories deal with entitlement and freedom. They frequently draw on fairy tales and myths. This collection hits a lot different themes and moods from cute to creepy. Overall this list a bit darker then what I really generally rec but I love all of these stories.

"The Contemporary Foxwife" by Yoon Ha Lee (4,763 words) — So this is probably one of my favorite stories ever, it's so cute and sweet. It's a bit of an outlier here being the happiest story and also the only story to feature a male animal bride, and the only story with science fictional elements – it’s set on a space station.

"The Animal Women" by Alix E. Harrow (8,534 words) — Content note: race in America, violence, attempted sexual assault. I got really sucked into this story set in the US south about how women’s voices are repressed. It is pretty dark in places but had an ending I found hopeful. While the women in this story aren’t brides, their animal affinities are important, and the story shares many themes with other animal bride stories.

"The Fox Bride" by Mari Ness (1,308 words) — This one really plays on the animal nature of the animal bride and also the way stories have of taking over reality. It's extremely unromantic about animals and what they are like.

"Dragon Brides" by Nghi Vo (3,620 words) — Rather than a story about dragons who marry men, this a story about women who marry dragons. Or rather about a princess who was once captured by a dragon. But it feels thematically of a piece with the rest.

"Jackalope Wives" by Ursula Vernon (5,000 words) — I love how the author uses the desert myths and legends here. Between that and her depiction of desert fauna and flora she really brings the desert to life. I also really enjoy Grandma Harken–it’s nice to see an old woman be the hero of a story and I enjoy her no nonsense attitude.

"Foxwife" by Hiromi Goto in The Faery Reel: Tales from the Twilight Realm ed. Ellen Datlow and Terrie Windling — This story gives us a glimpse of such an interesting world I always wish the author would write something else set there. I also really like how Goto uses aspects of Japanese myths.

These stories are about many types of animals and multiple genders, but they've all stuck with me, and changed how I think about women and desire. Looking at women and marriage through the lens of animals let me understand some of the ways women are objectified and treated as less than human. Particularity the way the fox (and the prince) are treated in Mari Ness' story where they aren't given a choice about their marriage. Though other stories have aspects of this too: for example, the careless way Grandma Harken's grandson treats the Jackalope wife. But the trope can also explore the ways women have power even in situations where they seem powerless. "Animal women" makes this point especially well. Ultimately, animal brides is a varied trope which is why there are so many great, but very different, stories featuring them. I hope you will take time to read some of these.

Hawkeye: Kate Bishop — Anchor Points was 100% the comic I needed to read. It was everything I wanted after the nightmare of U.S. Senate Funhouse — Encroaching Death Week: a fun, woman-led adventure that pokes fun at pop culture, critiques toxic masculinity, centers female friendships and mentorships, and ties realistic struggles that women face into supernatural shenanigans in non-didactic ways. Kate is adorable, confident, competent, and she gets the best sidekicks. If you're looking for a fun romp with a former Avenger-turned-private investigator, this will be your jam. Read more... )

The nominations process is ongoing. As of today, you all have five days to submit all of your nominations. So far, so good, despite a number of bumps that have since been smoothed. The tag set is still here. If you encounter errors, wandering tags, and the like, or if you have a question that needs an answer (especially if it did not get addressed at one of the previous posts; there have been a ton of comments), please start commenting here, and one of us will get back to you as soon as we are able. Otherwise, keep nominating that femslash.

EDIT – Tag migration between the two different versions of BanG Dream! fandom has already been brought to my attention, and that will be addressed on my next pass through the tag set.

Hello hello! We're halfway through the year, I've been reading up a storm,
and I promised [twitter.com profile] readingtheend that I would revisit my reading goals around
this time of year to check that they were still feasible and I still want to do them.

As a reminder, my goals were:

  • Read 150 books, of which 50 have to be prose

  • Read stories by 75 new-to-me female authors

  • #getouttamydamnhouse: stop having 90 library books in your
house, Susan, what are you doing

  • #unofficialqueerasfuckbookclub: Have more than 25% of my reading focus
    on queer stories

I'll be going from the full figures that I've been tracking, which is
different from what's on the end of my last Eight Book Minimum post, and different
from what's in my GoodReads challenge because that tracks rereads, which
I'm not doing here.

So let's see how I did!

I also made a list of the books that I was most excited about reading in
2017, so I should probably check on my progress on that while I'm doing
this!

I honestly though that I was doing terribly at all of my goals so far, so
this exercise has been really useful for me to see what I'm doing and fix
the ones that haven't gone to plan. (Eighty books. How.)
Thank you for the suggestion Jenny!

But how is everyone else doing? Completed any reading goals? Reconsidered any?
