Like [personal profile] celli, who will be very understanding when she gets into work this morning and sees that saying "ground beef" and "spaghetti" in combination to me has prompted a 400+ word essay touching on the basics of on my personal theory of what goes into a good red sauce (the various types of meats or lack thereof), how and why why I learned to cook the way I do based on my mother and maternal grandmother's food and personal histories and theories of economizing, food history back into the Roman Empire, and food science. Which I don't go into depth on, because it's early and also it's work email, but still.

Also she has prompted my meal planning for a bastardized primavera sauce for later this week, which is an entirely different type of pasta sauce. Though it does have mushrooms in it, and parmesan, which will contribute nicely to the umami. (I really can't stop myself.)

(Also it might be time to try another run at that delicious fresh fava bean and parmesan salad, even though fresh fava beans are a gigantic pain to peel. But it was SO GOOD. I just need to remember to get a loaf of good sourdough or French bread to toast first to soak up the sauce.)

Also she will forgive me for not ending a nested parenthetical properly.

Though she will laugh at me. Probably a lot. (I will deserve it.)

But the nice thing about pasta sauce is that I can cook it gluten-free and she can still come over and eat it ANY TIME. We can have a GF pot and a gluten pot of pasta. Which she knows. This is the joy of pasta. The pots wash and the gluten comes off. It's not like flour, which gets in the nooks and crannies of the KitchenAid and stays EVERYWHERE.

Though I do have a nifty recipe for GF peanut butter cookies from Smitten Kitchen if we ever want to get together and bake something. I could use a hand mixer or a wooden spoon instead of the KitchenAid. Also you do the GF stuff first, before you get the flour in the air, so that you don't cross-contaminate.

I was five minutes into my walk to work this morning when a rain storm fell on me. This is not the August weather that I ordered. Thankfully the office is warm enough today that I dried out quickly. I've successfully wrangled the Red Hat instructor who is, alas, of the special snowflake variety rather than the good egg variety. I've wrangled the Scheduling team into putting courses into rooms they can actually run in. I've successfully googled the problem with the photocopier and fixed it. Now if this s*dd*ng cold would just pack up and go I might survive the rest of the week without too much grumbling...

I missed most of the balloon fiesta this year and they didn't come over the top of our house and instead floated over to the left. So the only pictures I've got are of some small dots in a rapidly darkening sky last night:

Good morning everyone, and welcome to Radio Free Monday!

Ways To Give:

Anon linked to a fundraiser for Mike "Mictlan" Marquez, one of the MCs in the rap co-op Doomtree (featured several times on Welcome to Night Vale's weather reports). He was recently diagnosed with type 1 Diabetes and like many artists is uninsured; he's expecting significant expenses for treatment he's already had (an ER visit and Diabetic Ketoacidosis) as well as ongoing treatment. You can read more and support his medical fundraiser here.

[profile] demond119 is raising funds with husband Jeremy to help with after-care costs of his heart transplant; he's currently on the waiting list at the Mayo Clinic, and once he has the transplant, he will need an extended stay at a transplant house (Gift of Life) for several months. You can read more and reblog here and support the fundraiser here.

[profile] emeraldonyxdragon is raising funds to support herself while studying in London this fall. She was accepted to a graduate program there but her savings have gone to help her parents with debts; in joining the program she would also be able to escape an abusive household. To help raise awareness, she is holding a contest -- reblogs and likes on her fundraising post could win you a fanfic of your choice. You can support the fundraiser directly here.

[tumblr.com profile] rilee16 is struggling to cover medical expenses after two head injuries last year, and has a fundraiser running to cover living expenses, previous medical bills, and a recent rent increase. You can read more and help out here.

Activism

We're all aware of what happened in Charlottesville this weekend; there are some concrete ways to take action here and orgs to support here and just in case you need a little encouragement here is Asiatic Clam Man to remind you that you can do it.

Buy Stuff, Help Out:

[tumblr.com profile] magpiesmiscellany has a selection of tree-of-life pendants in various shapes, colors, and sizes for sale, with proceeds going to Planned Parenthood, Lambda Legal, the ACLU, Doctors Without Borders, Earthjustice, Sierra Club, and the National Immigration Law Center. You can read more and purchase them here.

News To Know:

Leverage Big/Mini Bang signups are open! I ran RFM items letting people know about the Bang for a few weeks, and now you can register to participate. You can read more and sign up here (sign up links are at the bottom of the post -- at least on my screen they don't actually look like links but they are, I promise!)

And this has been Radio Free Monday! Thank you for your time. You can post items for my attention at the Radio Free Monday submissions form. If you're not sure how to proceed, here is a little more about what I do and how you can help (or ask for help!). If you're new to fundraising, you may want to check out my guide to fundraising here.

Sign ups are open, which means it's time for Dear Creator letters.

Make sure to include your AO3 username, fandoms and pairings as well as the link.

Please wait until after you have completed/unlocked your letter post, if need be, before commenting here.

You can include additional pairings in your letter if you have more than six pairings you like in a fandom. But please take care to make sure they are clearly optional and include more information about the pairings that are actually in your sign up so your creator doesn't feel bad about being unable to write a pairing if they matched with you on something else.

Please also be respectful of other participants if they have different preferences in fic and requests to you.

Sign Ups are open!

*drumroll* We're a little early again, but sign ups are now open at the 2017 AO3 Collection.

They will remain open until 6PM EDT August 23 2017 (Countdown Clock)

You must be logged into an AO3 account to sign up. Remember you can shoot us an email at femslashexmod@gmail.com and we can help you out with an invitation if you do not already have an account.

Don't forget to check out the small fandoms post for ideas and to promote your favourite fandoms.

Go over the rules one more time before starting your sign up. A quick reminder of the important points:

Requests
  • You may request four to six fandoms from the list of nominated fandoms.

  • For each request, do not forget that you can request art, fic, or both.

  • For each fandom you must request one to six pairings from the list of nominated pairings. If you choose to request any pairing, double-check the list of nominated pairings for that fandom and make certain that any of the pairings listed are all right by you.

  • Your match will be based on fandom, pairing, and format (i.e. fic or art).

  • While the description section is optional, we strongly suggest you include Do Not Wants. Any DNWs/triggers included in the description will be enforced by the mods, however all other details will be optional for your writer or artist. You can also include a link to a Dear Creator letter if you would like to provide more information.

Offers
  • You may offer four to ten fandoms from the list of nominated fandoms.

  • Each fandom you offer must have one to ten pairings from the list of nominated pairings. If you choose to offer any pairing, double-check the list of nominated pairings for that fandom and make certain that any of the pairings listed are all right by you.

  • Again, as for requests, you can offer art, fic, or both.

Don't forget...
  • Check the Uncategorised and the No Media sections of the tag set for extra fandoms, crossovers, and original work tags.

  • Occasionally, after you select a fandom, pairings you want might not appear in the drop-down menu despite already being in the tag set. If that happens, please copy and paste the pairing you want from the tag set, but remember that you need to get it exactly the same.

  • You may edit your sign up as much as you like between now and the close of sign-ups.

  • Please read over your sign-ups one last time before they close. After all, what if you ticked the wrong box?

  • If you write a Dear Creator letter, you can share them at our letters post!

  • Your assignment will need to be completed and posted by 6PM EDT on October 7. Please consider carefully whether you will be able to commit to that deadline before signing up.

Keep an eye out for the new how-to post coming over the next few days if you're new to exchanges, or drop us a comment if you have any questions.

I am home!

I broke camp around six this morning, and when I started the hike it was 6:35 exactly, because I for once had the presence of mind to log it. Just getting to the trailhead was a couple of miles, due to some unforeseen obstructions (I did not get lost, there were just two unexpected fences, and also a long stretch of “closed” road that was a weird little detour through a post-apocalyptic landscape), so while I had planned to do about six miles, I ended up doing a little over eight and a half in three and a half hours, which considering I was carrying a 40lb pack I think was pretty good.

I missed the 9:49 train to Chicago by two minutes. I literally saw it pulling away from the station as I arrived. The next train was at 1:15, but it’s just as well I was delayed, since it meant I got to rest my feet for a while and also got to help at least a half dozen people figure out a) how the train worked, b) how much tickets were, and c) which train to get on.

So, I think the trip was a success. I worked out how the camp-reservation system at Dunewood functions, I tested out all my equipment (all remarkably functional, though I think I need to work on sleeping comfort issues), and I measured my endurance limit for hiking with a weighted pack.

It is about eight miles. That last half mile nearly killed me.

Also I got to return the Diane Mott Davidson book to the donation rack so someone else can enjoy it, and I added a book or two as well, which is a good thing since someone just offloaded a shitload of Clive Barker and it’s nice to have a little variety.

Now I am going to sit on the sofa, possibly order a pizza, and deliberately not empty out my pack until tomorrow.

하나. [personal profile] ride_4ever pointed out that I currently have exactly equal numbers of White Collar and Due South works on AO3 (243 each). This is a) awesome!!, b) an incentive not to post any more fandom White Collar things, which I will undoubtedly ignore, c) [redacted whining about my thirst for a new fandom].

둘. [personal profile] kanarek13 made an amazing gorgeous (NSFW) artwork in response to my White Collar P/E/N ficlet last week. *wins everything*

셋. I just read In Defiance of All Geometry by [archiveofourown.org profile] idiopathicsmile, a Les Mis modern AU about Enjolras/Combeferre/Grantaire all falling for each other, and it was adooorable, especially the getting-together scene, which made me laugh.

넷. I am 1.5 episodes from the end of Capital Scandal and about to finish it off.

We won a Hugo Award for Best Fanzine!

Ira and Susan on stage giving a speech with text overlaid reading This was a triumph. I'm making a note here: HUGE SUCCESS

Ira and Susan attended Worldcon 75 on our behalf (we can't even with our jealousy over Ira getting to meet Daveed Diggs). We're so grateful to everyone who nominated and voted for us this year. Thanks also to our fellow finalists, too. It was lovely being a part of a robust ballot featuring commentary and criticism from a wide range of voices. The full list of finalists and winners can be read at thehugoawards.org.

We're still reeling a bit, but we wanted to at least reach out and say THANK YOU and OMG and WHAT and THANK YOU OMG, etc. We are super honored and so excited! Congrats to US, congrats to the other winners, and thanks for liking our work! ♥ You can find the text of our speech below.

Thanks so much for this amazing award. We accept on behalf of ourselves and the four Lady Business editors who couldn't be here tonight: Clare, Jodie, KJ, and Renay.

We also want to thank everyone who has supported Lady Business throughout the years in ways large and small, including our readers, commenters, and guest columnists. Special thanks go out to John Scalzi, whose work welcomed Renay back to science fiction. Without his books Renay wouldn't have been in the SF community to start this project with our co-founders, Ana and Jodie. Thanks to Ana Grilo of The Book Smugglers for consistent support and writing opportunities, Kate Elliott and Justin Landon for believing in our work and being the best cheerleaders, and Zachariah Carlson for being our personal Shadow Broker all these years.

When Lady Business was founded, the goal was to create a safer space for discussions in a community that was still struggling to recognize white women, much less any other marginalized identities. There's still work to be done, and change has been slow, but we are thrilled our project has been a voice within this cultural shift. We are incredibly honored that the Hugo voters find our intersectional feminist work valuable, and we will keep working to remain worthy of your recognition as we move forward.

We dedicate this award to Jodie Baker and Ana Silva. Thank you very much.

A Day Out in Cardiff

Pokémon Go is having a safari event in a number of European cities at the moment. This apparently means that there are more Unown about and also that one of the other regional special Pokémon, Kangaskhan, is out and about in those cities. I looked at the list of cities that were included in this and decided that I didn't really have another excuse to go to London right now and that I definitely wasn't paying for a train ticket to London (£expensive!) just to catch rare Pokémon.

Then I realised that Cardiff was also on the list. And that, for a thirteen quid return ticket I could also amble through some second hand book shops, visit several comic shops, wander around a really nice city, and maaaybe catch some Pokémon.

So [personal profile] keziath and I took a trip to Cardiff today. We didn't find any Unown but she found a lot of books, I found a Marvin the Martian pop vinyl figure, we both found some interesting alcohol (I couldn't not buy some Grumpy Old Man wine for [personal profile] battlehamster), and we also found:

2017-08-12_09-25-31

Just look at that baby Roo (or should that be baby Skhan?) in it's pouch.

I also got to take [personal profile] keziath on her first raid. One Bayleef! Defeated!

It would have been nice to find an Unown too but maybe next year. They're supposedly out there in the wild everywhere. They're just... rare. Really, really rare.
